Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1976, his interest in photography began while studying Social Communication at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ).
He soon began working at the studio of renowned photographer Luiz Garrido, where he served as an assistant for three years. In addition to his work as a photography assistant, he gained experience working at the professional lab Casa da Foto.
By the age of 23, Daniel was already collaborating as a photographer for major publications such as
Vogue and Visionaire, in addition to shooting various fashion and beauty campaigns—including an international campaign for the cosmetics brand Max Factor.
Career Highlights
• MASP: He was the youngest photographer to be included in the Pirelli Collection at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP).
• Hasselblad Master: In 2004, he was selected as a Hasselblad Master representing Brazil, appearing in a calendar alongside illustrious photographers like Albert Watson and Mary Ellen Mark.
• Cannes Festival: In 2006, he became the first Brazilian invited to participate in the “New Photographers” exhibition, sponsored by Getty Images, during the Cannes Festival.
• Cultural Impact: His photo essays on Rio de Janeiro’s beach culture, the Piscinão de Ramos, and
Carioca Funk have been exhibited in Art galleries and published in both Brazilian and international magazines.
Transition to Film
Daniel began his transition from photography to film when he joined Prodigo Filmes in 2014. He has directed commercials for brands such as L’Oréal, O Boticário, Natura, Santander, Itaú, Google, and Uber.
Today, he balances his time between Directing and Cinematography (Director of Photography) for both content and advertising projects. He has filmed and directed projects for Globo , HBO, and Netflix.
His most recent work was as the Director of Photography for the series Congonhas: A Tragedy Foretold (Congonhas: Uma Tragédia Anunciada) for Netflix.
